Frequently Asked Questions
What is a battery backup garage door opener?
A garage door opener that has a built-in or external battery. Most of the time, it sits idle but if you lose power due to wildfires or severe weather, the battery backup is designed to engage the garage door opener, so you can get your car in and out. The battery’s power may not be the same as your electric opener, however, it’s strong enough to raise and lower your door several times during a 24-hour period. This means that during power outages, it’s possible to open your garage and get out of your house in case of an emergency.
Will a generic 12-volt battery work on my Chamberlain battery backup opener?
Chamberlain recommends only using OEM batteries provided by Chamberlain.
How much does a garage door backup battery cost?

Are Chamberlain batteries rechargeable?

Every battery holds enough juice to open and close the garage door twenty times or more. Recharging your Chamberlain garage door opener usually takes about 4 hours.
What are the benefits of a battery backup garage door opener?
When facing an emergency like a power outage, the last thing you need to worry about is not being able to get your vehicle out of your garage. With a battery backup, there is no need to manually disengage the door. Just operate your door like you normally would.
Most battery backup systems allow up to 40 door openings and closings within 24 hours of a power outage. To conserve battery life the opener will open and close at a slower rate than normal, and the light on your opener will not come on.
Why is my garage door opener beeping?
Your Chamberlain/Liftmaster garage door opener is beeping every 2 seconds.
If you hear a beep every two minutes, the unit has lost power and shifted to backup battery power. The battery LED will display a solid orange color.
Once the power is back up, and if the orange light is still lit, then test the electrical outlet where the unit is connected. You can plug in another device in the same outlet to check if there is power coming into the outlet. If there is something wrong with the outlet, you will have to call an electrician to repair it.
The garage door opener is beeping every 30 seconds.
If there is an orange light flashing, this is an indicator that the battery is low. Check the electrical outlet by plugging in a different device. If the power is on, and the LED has not changed from orange to green, you will have to replace the battery. But if the LED displays a solid red color, this indicates that the battery is entirely out of power and cannot be recharged. You will have to replace your Chamberlain battery.
